Audition Process

San Jose Taiko is a world-renowned arts company that performs across North America and the globe, sharing the dynamic art form of taiko drumming. We are looking for talent to join our training program, which feeds into our professional company.  San Jose Taiko's performance style is a fusion of athleticism, musicianship, dance, and martial arts. Ideal candidates are experienced in at least one of these disciplines. Interested in challenging yourself and becoming a part of our cultural arts community?

The Audition Process is split into two phases. At the end of each phase, there is an evaluation to see if the candidate is qualified to move to the next phase.  Candidates who make it through both phases will be invited to become an SJT apprentice. Apprenticeship lasts approximately one year.

2024 Audition Process Dates:

(subject to change)

Phase 1: January 10 - June 5 - Tuesdays, 7:00-9:30PM and Wednesdays, 6:30-9:30PM

Phase 2: June 12 - October 23 - Tuesdays, 7:00-9:30PM, Wednesdays, 6:30-9:30PM and Thursdays 7:00-9:30PM

Those interested in joining our Performing Company will be asked to submit a video of them performing taiko to be reviewed by San Jose Taiko Artistic Staff members.

Guidelines for video submission:

  • Up to three videos with combined length no longer than 15 minutes in which the applicant is clearly visible throughout.

  • Videos can be shared via a file sharing website such as Google Drive or DropBox or sent as links to videos on YouTube.

  • Preference is for video submissions to feature performance video but if none are available, videos of applicant rehearsing or practicing taiko may be considered.

After this, a candidate may be invited to interview with San Jose Taiko’s Artistic Staff. Based on that interview, a candidate may be formally invited to join the formal Audition Process which starts each year in January.

Submission deadline to be considered for 2024 Audition Class is Friday, December 1st.
